Guestbook2
Just want to say hello to my fellow CB's. I was in DaNang 69-70 and worked on the wonder arches at MAG 16 and then worked at Black Rock Quarry.
Thank you Billy (Bolin) for contacting me and letting me know what is going on. I will see if I can find info on names for the third deployment and send it to you.

Forty years ago at the Amundsen Scott South Pole Station most of our crew of 22 were gathered together for breakfast when our OIC, Dr. McLean arrived with a message regarding the assassination of JFK. All of us, perhaps in response to our isolation, felt a sense of shock and grief for our fallen president. Dr. McLean asked me to walk out to the South Pole site while on my way to the equipment shop and lower the flag to half staff.
During the 10 minute walk to the Pole, I wondered if I was going to render the traditional hand salute when I was all alone. I did and cried as well. As my tears froze in my beard, I felt a chill much colder than the 30 below temperature and became imprinted with an experience I cannot forget.
But, things were put into a proper perspective years later when I tried to share this unique experience with my children. After patiently listening to my tale, they only asked one question, "Who was JFK?"

As has already been said, we will surely miss "Doc" at all our future reunions. He wasn't able to make it to Gulfport this year because of the cancer that took his life. I had the opportunity to visit with him in Hampton, VA. in 2002, as many of you did and I would take nothing for that. Doc was in my sister company at the Lakes in 1966 for Boot Camp. I did not remember that but he did. That's the kind of guy he was.

As with the loss of any of our MCB 121 Brothers we are all somewhat diminished by the loss of a past comrad in arms. This is especially true in the case of Doc. There is small conselation in knowing that his worries and pain are over and that he is in a better place. "A good SEABEE reporting sir, I've spent my time in hell"

If there is a God may he/she strike down(indeed I beg, plead, implore him/her)to strike down the scum that have fowled our Page. I love NMCB 121, all its past members, and this web page. But, Maybe it's time to shut this page down for 4-6 mos. and hope we lose this human sludge that has relieved itself on us. Why don't they get the message? Maybe shut the page down and notify the members of it's restart in the Skinney Sheet. CAN DO?????? A new problem the SEABEES CAN handle.

Just a thought! I pray to God that the shameless sexual deviants who post sick trash in a Guest Book that often serves to support and reassure the worried children of deployed Seabees do not have children of their own to abuse! Recently, I had to remove the NSVA Guest Book from my favorites list after discovering that my visiting, pre-teen grand daughter was exploring my favorites list. May the wrath of God fall upon the scum that pollute the Internet!

Had a great time at the reunion. Just found out that my older son will be deployed to Iraq in October. Although he is in the "Army" engineers, I still am proud of him, but worried. His time in the Gulf War was my worst as a parent.

Clearly, spammers are the maggots of the Internet. They offer nothing of value while they attempt to promote Web sites without merit or value. They will never learn that offering nonsense, filth, and the stupid ideas of idiots is a waste of a valuable resource. They serve as a constant reminder that human-kind will always suffer the burden of the crap generated by the mentally incompetent members of society.

I guess it gives a thrill to those who have been absolutely useless to society over the years to get on this site, since it is a Military oriented website, and post some sort of dumb, good for nothing comment. We who did serve our Country when duty called I guess just need to be thankful that the entire nation still has many real men and women out there who make up the core of the present military thus keeping this riff raff out of it. At least when they are messing with this website they are not attempting to replace a worthy soul in boot camp somewhere. This website has a purpose for being and no matter how many stupid entries there are, it will always be great because of it's original reason for existing. God Bless America and all those who did have the guts to serve!

Great web site. My hat is off to you fellows for keeping the spirit of NMCB 121 alive. I was a member of NMCB 11 for their Quang Tri deployment and then went ti the Ice for Winter Over 1970. Over the years I've lost track with many of the fine Sea Bees and Sailors i served with. Finding them is reqarding. Keep up the good work.

On Saturday, 31 May 2003, I returned to Davisville, Rhode Island for a poorly planned visit to the Seabee Museum and Memorial only to find it closed. Nevertheless, my wife and I were warmly received by the Saturday volunteers and enjoyed a presentation outlining the scope of this effort to ensure enduring recognition of the many contributions of Seabees both past, present, and future.
Those who are volunteering a significant portion of their lives to bring this bold undertaking to reality remind me of the proud statement, “As a Seabee, I've done so much with so little for so long, I think I can do anything with nothing!” However, we all know this fails the test of reality regarding material costs and the other costs associated with meeting today’s construction standards. Yet, these dedicated men refuse to give up their dream even when confronted with overwhelming odds. In a profound recognition of something wonderful, I immediately donated the meager contents of my wallet. Seabees, these are worthy shipmates who need and deserve our support!

I look forward to seeing everybody at the reunion.

I have come across this site in my search for friends and fellow CBs who may have served in the 53rd NCB during WW2. I am actively researching my father's itinerery through the Pacific Theatre during that war and would be greatly appreciative of any and all info that anyone could forward me. I have a couple of hundred photos from the island chain from that era, some with names on the back and some not identifiable. My father also served with the 18th Marine Replacement Batallion as well and the 13th Replacement Batallion Company "C". My father's name was Lionel Woodrow Mills if anyone out there has heard of or served with him. Thank you very much for allowing me the forum in which to place this message/request/and above all "thanks".

A special thanks to Alan Kane for the story about Art Purks. I was riding shotgun with Steve Peterson a few trucks ahead of you and all we could see behind was smoke. Stopping was the last thing we wanted to do until an antose pulled off to our right, turned and fired off all six rounds into the boulder field on the left and nearly taking the cab off of our five ton dump in the process. We were both nearly deaf for about two days after that but it turned out that there was one mortar position set up in the rocks and apparently another one up on the side a little farther down the road. I think that the only reason that everything stopped then was because the Marines in the lead stopped to come back to the ambush site.
I'm glad that you came through it okay and I'm hopeful that we are getting closer to finding Art. I've looked for him for a long time but had no luck at all until I found out about you guys and this web site.
Thanks again for the great story about Art and for your help in trying to find him.

I suppose there are many of you who have not heard of Arthur Purks before. I hardly knew him myself but there is a real possibility that he saved my life. We were members of the advance party for MCB 121’s second deployment to Camp Wilkinson, Gia Le, RVN and arrived early enough for an assignment to convoy vehicles up the road from Da
Nang. As we reached a section of our route known by some as the “Bowling Alley,” as you felt set up for a strike, we were ambushed with small arms and mortars. The trucks ahead stopped leaving us sitting in the kill zone. By the time the trucks ahead began moving again, our truck had 30 bullet holes in the cab, 3 flat tires, a shattered windshield and Purks was wounded in the left bicep, his back, and also suffered a severe injury to his right wrist. When the AK round that penetrated his flak jacket and entered his back with enough force to throw him forward and towards me, I thought I was going to die. I pushed him upright and thank God, he began to drive us to safety. Meanwhile, blood was spraying everywhere from his wrist until I applied a battle dressing. We came up on a duce and half loaded with Marines and they loaded Purks aboard and left me to deal with the 3 flat tires. When I tried to see Purks the next day, I was told he was on his way to the states. We never had a chance to know what he could contribute to our second deployment but nevertheless; no one can doubt the courage of this SEABEE!
